The Pasture is a blog dedicated to fanworks as creative and cultural practices worth taking seriously. I reject the idea that fanfiction, fanart, and fan music are inherently lesser than other art. For me and many others, fandom became our primary source of community and belonging, online and off. Even amongst ourselves, the instinct is often to dismiss these works as lesser, even stepping stones toward original marketable work.

Over time I've recognized this dismissal was never about objective quality. It's a tool used to exclude marginalized groups from mainstream culture, and fandoms are made up of predominantly marginalized people whose work pushes back against traditional media norms. That is why those who decide what counts as “good” art use those rules to exclude fan works.

In response, fans built our own communities, values, and platforms. We rely less and less on traditional industries to drive our culture. Through The Pasture I want to continue that and create space for the un-marketable, transformative, and cringe.
